As if rising from the hillside to the south of the village, discover the Sainte-Agnès military fort. Set into the rock, it was used to repel the Italians in June 1940!
Suspended on a rocky outcrop on the French-Italian border, Sainte-Agnès has always been a coveted defensive post. In the 16th century, on the border between the domains of the Count of Provence and Genoa, the House of Savoy built its first fortifications. As the last rampart of the Maginot Line, the fort was its final southern bastion. A veritable underground city, it boasts 2,000 m² of galleries and rooms with ultra-modern facilities for the time: kitchen, power plant, hospital, etc., and 3 exhibition rooms on the site's history and excavations.
