Built at the end of the 12th century in the back country of the Maures massif in the Var, the Cistercian Abbey of Thoronet is one of the three Provençal sisters, along with the Abbeys of Sénanque and Silvacane.
The abbey as a whole is built in the finest style of the Romanesque era, giving an impression of unity and serenity. The Abbey of Thoronet is the quintessence of Cistercian art in its pure lines and simple spaces, inspired by the intellectual rigour of Saint Bernard.
